Staffordshire Police have issued advice to residents after receiving reports of "distraction thefts" in the local area.

Elderly shoppers were often targeted in the thefts, which involve distracting a victim in order to steal their valuables without them noticing.

The thefts have recently taken place in various shopping locations.

Police have now warned residents to stay alert while shopping, and to keep their personal belongings secure.

Emma Ray, Community Engagement Assistant at Staffordshire Police, said: "We've recently received reports of distraction purse thefts at shopping locations across the County.

"These thefts, where elderly shoppers have been targeted, have followed a similar pattern - the offender distracts the victim with conversation whilst getting close enough to steal a purse or wallet.

"Please be alert whilst shopping and make sure that your purse or wallet is securely stored between purchases. If you pay for items on a card always make sure your pin number is kept out of sight from other shoppers.

"Visit the Staffordshire Police website for tips to avoid theft of personal belongings whilst you are out and about.

"Please note that we are unable to log crime reports through Smart Alert. If you have a query or would like to report a non-urgent crime please call 101 or contact us via our Facebook or Twitter page. In an emergency always call 999."

A similar incident took place in Biddulph in July, with Biddulph Nub News reporting how pickpockets stole a woman's purse while she was distracted in the town's Sainsbury's supermarket.

Another similar incident also occurred in the town in June, when a woman had a purse stolen from her handbag in Biddulph town centre.
