Groups and organisations working with vulnerable communities in Staffordshire can access £200,000 of funding as part of a new grants scheme.

The new #DoingOurBit Community Grants Scheme set up by Staffordshire County Council is available to voluntary and community organisations based in the county.

Funding will be available to groups of all sizes who work with and support vulnerable communities and residents, particularly older people, children and families.

Projects that support older people to be more independent, reduce social isolation or help to improve their general health and wellbeing are likely to be eligible for the funding.

Likewise, groups or schemes that help families stay together, support them to reach their full potential, or help them to improve their general health and wellbeing are also likely to be eligible.

Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council said: "We have a thriving voluntary and community sector here in Staffordshire who play an important role in helping improve the lives of people in the county.

"Not only do these groups provide vital services and support within their local communities but they also help to encourage people to support each other to remain safe and well.

"Throughout the pandemic we saw how people and communities came together to help each other and it's vital that we support these organisations so they are able to continue with the valuable work they do. We'll be trying to make the application process as quick and easy as possible, so I would encourage groups to see if they are eligible and apply."

The council works on local community issues with groups such as the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS) and Support Staffordshire.

Garry Jones, Chief Executive at Support Staffordshire said: "There are hundreds of amazing voluntary and community organisations making a huge difference in local communities and we're all grateful for the work they do.

"The additional funding is very welcome and I would definitely encourage groups large and small to have a look and make an application once the fund is opened."

Phil Pusey, Chief Executive at SCVYS said: "Any additional funding to support the voluntary sector, who have gone above and beyond in their support of local people is welcomed. The hope is that this funding will help to ensure small, local organisations remain an important part of building healthy, thriving communities where people of all ages feel valued and can access the help they need to live well."

The new #DoingOurBit Community Grants Scheme will be available from 30th September 2020 when people will be able to find out more.
