Biddulph: Over 600 signatures in 24 hours on "Leave the Wheel Alone" petition

By Jack Lenton 5th Aug 2021

Over 600 people have signed a petition against moving the wheel away from Biddulph Town Hall in the 24 hours after it was launched.

Biddulph Nub News reported earlier this week how residents set up the petition in opposition to moving the wheel in order to incorporate it into a new memorial to Biddulph's miners on Station Road.

The wheel, which was installed on the High Street following the closure of Biddulph's Victoria Colliery has been in place in front of the town hall since 1983.

Those who have signed the petition felt that moving the wheel would leave it in a less visible area of the town, and that it should remain in what they believe is a more prominent location outside the town hall.

At the time of Biddulph Nub News's previous article shortly following the launch of the petition, it had received 42 signatures, but this quickly increased, with the petition now showing 657 signatures at the time of writing.

After passing the 500 signature milestone, Timothy Wintle, who started the petition, thanked all those who signed it for their support.

He said: "I just want to say a heartfelt thankyou for expressing your democratic right to free speech and completing this petition for change on this local Biddulph matter.

"Could I encourage you to please share it with your friends who live or are associated with Biddulph. We're now over 500 signatories but I believe we can get this a lot higher."
