Biddulph Town Councillor resigns creating possibility of by-election

A by-election could be held in Biddulph after a town councillor resigned from his role at the authority.

Paul Barlow, who represented the Biddulph South ward on Biddulph Town Council, has resigned from the council.

Mr Barlow was unavailable for immediate comment but said he would explain the reason for his resignation in the near future.

The resignation leaves a vacancy at the town council that could be filled with a by-election if enough interest is present from local residents.

If sufficient interest is not present then the vacancy will be filled by co-option, meaning the other councillors will choose between them which councillor is elected.

In order for a by-election to be held, ten residents who are eligible to vote in the Biddulph South ward must write to the district council offices within the next two weeks to ask for one.

A notice of vacancy for the role was posted following Mr Barlow's resignation.

It said: "Notice is hereby given that a casual vacancy has arisen in the office of councillor for the South ward in Biddulph Town Council.

"If by 14 days excluding dies non, after the date of this notice a request for an election to fill said vacancy is made in writing to the returning officer at the address below by ten electors for the said parish, and election will be held to fill the said vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option."

If you would like to request a by-election to fill the role, write to:
