Staffordshire Moorlands District Councillors have agreed to go ahead with an order to ban drinking alcohol in Biddulph town centre.

Biddulph Nub News reported recently how councillors had agreed to move forward with the proposals before bringing them back to the authority's Cabinet for final approval.

At a Cabinet meeting held yesterday (Tuesday), that approval was granted, meaning a Public Spaces Protection Order was approved for Biddulph town centre, as well as the town centres in Cheadle and Leek.

Councillors did not make any comments, and instead moved straight to the vote, which was unanimously in favour of implementing the order. The order was approved in a short five minute segment at the end of the meeting.

The order prohibits consuming alcohol or carrying an unsealed container of alcohol in any of the three town centres, and has been approved in an effort to combat anti-social behaviour in the towns.

A Public Spaces Protection Order was already implemented in Biddulph in 2017, which empowered a constable or authorised person to require a person to stop drinking alcohol or confiscate their alcohol, but this order expired in November 2020.

The order will last for a maximum of three years.

The consumption of alcohol will still be permitted on licensed premises and clubs within the town centre, and areas within their curtilage.

Anyone who refuses to comply with the order could receive a fine.
