A former Biddulph mayor is due to reach the Ukraine border tonight as part of the fire service's drive to provide aid following the Russian invasion.

Nub News reported recently how Chris Wood, who was Biddulph's mayor in 2017 and is also an ex-fireman, is in a convoy of donated fire engines and thousands of pieces of equipment on a three-day journey to Ukraine.

The 22 vehicles, which are made up of fire engines and trucks full of equipment, have been donated by fire services all over the country and will be handed over to Ukraine once they reach the border.

The convoy made their way down to Kent before setting off on Saturday morning before crossing the English Channel and driving through France, Germany and Poland throughout the weekend and today (Monday).

They are due to reach the Polish border with Ukraine any minute now, and have spotted rocket launchers, military aircraft and other wartime equipment as they get nearer.

In an update to Nub News today, Chris said he and the rest of the team are in good spirits and ready to hand over the much-needed fire engines and equipment.

He said: "We arrived in Wrocaw late last night after a full day's driving, and were up early this morning to make our way to the Ukraine border.

"Team morale is excellent and we can't wait to meet up with the Polish and Ukrainian firefighters to do familiarisation training and to hand over the equipment."

Best of luck to Chris and the crew as they continue their journey!
