Biddulph residents reacted with anger, but didn't forget their good sense of humour, when a mattress was dumped in the town on the same day that fly tipping fines in the district were doubled.

The old, dirty mattress was spotted yesterday (Tuesday), dumped on Weaver Close near Biddulph Valley Leisure Centre.

Biddulph Nub News also reported yesterday how Staffordshire Moorlands District Councillors voted to double the price of fines handed out to fly-tippers amid a "growing problem" of waste being dumped at local beauty spots.

The fine was doubled from £200 to the maximum amount that councils can set - £400.

Residents shared their disappointment of yet another case of fly tipping in the local area, with one saying: "This is going on far too often. People are doing rubbish removals for next to nothing but people are still dumping anywhere. Disgusting."

Another added: "People just don't care anymore, no shame at all."

However, residents also saw the opportunity to make light of the situation, with one joking: "Don't know how they sleep at night."

Another quipped: "Don't worry, the police have sprung into action."

While a third added: "The culprit is lying low for a while."

To report illegally dumped rubbish fill out a form on the council's website here.
