"Minimise risk" when meeting family at Christmas, Staffordshire residents told

People in Staffordshire are urged to take every precaution they can this Christmas to protect themselves and their loved ones from Covid-19.

Staffordshire County Council says cases of Covid are high and continuing to rise, and pointed out that Government have reintroduced a string of national measures in response to the Omicron variant as well as shortening the length of time people need to wait before becoming eligible for a Covid-19 booster vaccine.

Face coverings are now compulsory in most public indoor settings and people have been told to work from home if they can. If people are meeting friends and family over Christmas, the council says they should take a lateral flow test beforehand to reduce the risk of unknowingly spreading the virus. People are also encouraged to meet outdoors where possible or open windows to let fresh air in when meeting people indoors.

Anybody eligible for a Covid-19 booster vaccine is encouraged to get it and boost their protection, along with anybody still in need of a first or second dose.

Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Support Member for Public Health and Integrated Care, Dr Johnny McMahon, said: "While we are in a much stronger position than last Christmas thanks to the phenomenal national vaccine rollout we must still recognise the risks that Covid, and particularly the Omicron variant pose.

"Please ensure you're doing all you can to minimise risk when meeting others over the festive period, and please get your vaccine and booster as soon as you are eligible as it's the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones."
