Additional Feature of Aldi Biddulph store approved

Local News by Alex Greensmith 5th Jul 2021

There are just over three months until the new Aldi store in Biddulph opens.

Alongside the 40 jobs that it will bring to our town and swift opening date, the UK office for the German supermarket brand have more to celebrate.

This is as while construction had already started this year, a new feature on the premises just off Tunstall Road has just been approved.

The former school-come-supermarket site will now also feature totem towers, which will illuminate guests towards Aldi.

It will contain four lit fascia signs and one non-lit vinyl doorway of Aldi's branding.

A series of deferrals led to this approval by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council last week.

There were concerns about light pollution for the new Biddulph store, however, the signs will be switched off outside opening hours to conserve electricity and not disturb neighbours.

Lights which will spotlight advertisements will be turned off outside working hours "To protect the amenity enjoyed by nearby residents," said a report.

Safety was also an issue to objectors. A Staffs Moorlands Council planning offer added on the matter: "The direct light source would not be visible to drivers and illuminance levels detailed would be below maximum permitted for the area.

"All of the signs would be set back form the public footpath and highway [at least eight metres from the road], they do not pose any risk to public safety.

"The advertisement displays would not adversely affect public safety or amenity. They

would appear as appropriate signage for the new commercial retail building and site."

Two brick built entrance totems displaying signs internally illuminated with LEDs and 1 pole mounted entrance totem also received approval. These will point to advertisements.

Every advert the store places on the new totems must be approved by the local planning authority.

It is unknown what the precise opening hours for the new stores will be, however, we do know the opening date.

An Aldi spokesperson said to Macclesfield Nub News: "Construction for our new Biddulph store is progressing well as we move towards opening on October 21.

"This will create up to 40 new jobs for the community."
