Aldi has been in the spotlight in Biddulph this week after an application to build a new supermarket in the town was recommended for approval by town councillors, subject to a range of concerns.
The German supermarket giant submitted an application to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council last month to build a new store on the site of the former Meadows Special School off Tunstall Road.
And over the last few days, you have been making your voices heard on social media, with dozens of comments and a range of views on the supermarket potentially moving into the town.
The prevailing view among commenters so far appears to be that the supermarket should be built as soon as possible, although other views have also been expressed.
Below, Biddulph Nub News has compiled a cross-section of your comments, so you can gauge what people have to say about the matter at a glance...
- "Please hurry up, Biddulph so needs another supermarket."
- "Can't come soon enough."
- "Can't wait."
- "About time. Now stop procrastinating and start building."
- "Concerns seem to be minor and easily resolved, so now over to Staffs Moorlands for a quick positive decision on the planning application."
- "Feels like the ifs and buts are being dragged out. Fingers crossed it's sorted ASAP."
- "Can't wait for it to be built and open."
- "This will wipe out local shops totally. I moved here because of Biddulph town which had shops providing fruit veg and meat all now gone. There is an Aldi in Congleton 4 miles away. lots of complaints about the town going downhill but no one is prepared to support it."
- "Crack on and get the deal done, Biddulph needs an alternative to Sainsbury's, we need to stop letting petty concerns hinder progress. Embrace change and let this town stop being the poor relation in the Staffordshire Moorlands."
- "Hurry up, can't come soon enough."
- "Get it done so normal folk can save money and help create jobs in Biddulph."
- "Splendid news. Let's get it built and the shelves stacked and the doors open. Biddulph folk need this store open as quickly as possible."
- "Sainsbury's is expensive for a weekly shop all the time so I end up going to Aldi in Congleton anyways but not everyone has the luxury of driving! We need this in Biddulph and the jobs would be a good thing too!"
- "I have two concerns, one is the entrance and exit to the site which could cause traffic problems, doubtless overcome by a traffic light system, but can imagine the chaos at rush hour with northbound traffic having to negotiate two sets of lights. The other concern is that this development constitutes an 'out of town' development, which could have dire consequences on the independent shops in the town centre."
- "Looks like a well thought out design for traffic access, minimal disturbance of views for other buildings too. Doesn't use the entire site either, leaving the school fields for the kids."
- "Sainsbury's has had the monopoly for too long. Please get this passed!"
- "It would do very well. Also a lot of passing trade."
- "Can't wait, we desperately need this in the town."
- "We need a good cheaper supermarket so we don't have to travel out of town. People will still shop at Aldi whether it's in town or not."
- "Throughout this whole lockdown situation it has become clear that Biddulph as a town had no choice of supermarket, other than online shopping. Biddulph used to have a choice - Co-Op, Kwik Save, Somerfield etc. We need a choice, and an alternative. Many other towns around the area such as Congleton, Leek etc have multiple supermarkets. We need the same."
- "Jobs for local people, better choice for shoppers and good use of a disused/derelict site. What's not to like?"
- "No, support the little shops in the town they need us perhaps if we supported them we could have more greengrocers, fishmongers and butchers instead of take-aways and pubs."
- "What about the traffic, rubbish, nature, children hanging round the car parks? There are empty shops in the town."
- "We need a bit of competition between Sainsbugs and Aldi. It'll also hopefully bring some employment opportunities for Biddulph folk."
- "It is desperately needed, can only be good for the town. Competition is healthy... get on with it!"
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council will have the final say on the application at a later date.
