People and businesses in Staffordshire that have been affected by the Coronavirus crisis have been urged to find out how they can access support, following the publication of the latest benefit claimant figures.

The figures show that 4.9% of Staffordshire's population are currently claiming benefits. However, this is considerably lower than the national average of 6.5%.

The number of furloughed employees in Staffordshire stands at around a third of the local workforce, around the same as the national figure.

Initiatives such as the countywide Redundancy and Recruitment Triage Service have been set up for businesses whose employees are at risk of redundancy, as well as for employees at risk or for those who are furloughed and uncertain about their future.

The service matches those recently made redundant with new work in the sectors currently experiencing growth. It also works with businesses that are having to make changes to their workforce as a result of the pandemic.

Free careers and jobs advice is offered, including:

  • Exploring the current jobs market, including those jobs in high-demand sectors and identify suitable work
  • Understand people's skills and qualities, with particular attention to their transferable skills
  • How to write effective and tailored CVs
  • Prepare and practice for interviews
  • How to find and apply for jobs in a digital world – including using LinkedIn and social media

Staffordshire County Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills Philip White said: "As the latest out-of-work claimant count statistics are issued today we would again remind people and businesses to find out more about all of the support available to them that has been put in place by a range of partners in response to Covid-19.

"We expect the Redundancy and Recruitment Triage Service to become increasingly busy in the coming weeks and months as we head towards the end of the national Job Retention Scheme. We're also pleased that initiatives such as our micro business grant scheme have made a difference.

"While the latest figures come as no surprise, they demonstrate the impact of Covid-19 on our economy will be long lasting. People can be assured that the county council and its partners will continue to do all we can to support employees, those out of work or facing redundancy and our businesses through this period."

The triage service is entirely confidential and supported by qualified careers advisors.
