Biddulph café saddened after free items meant for struggling families sold on for profit
A Biddulph café has said it is "saddened" after learning that items it had been giving away for free to help those in need had instead been sold on for a profit.
Biddulph Nub News reported previously how the not-for-profit café has a number of schemes to help low income residents, including a community food club.
The café, based on the High Street, is run by community volunteers with the aim of providing affordable meals and shelter from social isolation to vulnerable residents.
However, the café shared the frustrating news yesterday (Sunday) that some had been taking advantage of their generosity by selling the items they gave away to make a profit, rather than them being used to benefit struggling residents as intended.
They said: "It has come to our attention that there are people selling on items they are getting from the café.
"We have recently been able to get some really amazing products for you of named luxury brands, particularly pamper/toiletries items.
"We give these away for free. Please if you don't need them, don't take them so someone else can use and enjoy them. They are certainly not there for you to take and profit from.
"We won't name and shame but it has been noticed and we're very saddened."
Residents have since reacted with disappointment to the news, with one saying: "Absolutely unbelievable! Many thanks to all the team for what you do for the community."
Another added: "All the work you do for families in need and this is happening. It's out of order."
While a third said: "That's an absolute disgrace, you really are helping people and their families, utterly disgusting and potentially damaging a financial and community lifeline."
