Two Biddulph councillors have been named as local heroes by the University Hospitals North Midlands (UHNM) charity.

Biddulph Nub News reported previously how the charity had asked people to nominate those who had gone above and beyond during the pandemic.

The charity wanted to recognise people who might be working in the essential services, or have volunteered to help someone in their hour of need with an act of kindness.

And two Biddulph councillors have now been named in the charity's latest round of recognition.

Cllrs Wayne Rogers and Nigel Yates were recognised for their voluntary work.

The pair have spent many hours handing out prescriptions, working in vaccination centres, delivering food parcels and much more for the benefit of Biddulph.

The pair were nominated by fellow Biddulph councillor Jill Salt, who said: "They are both parish councillors for Biddulph (volunteer roles), and they have delivered (for nothing) over 1,000 prescriptions in the Biddulph area to those shielding.

"They've very recently given 20 hours as volunteers at Biddulph vaccination centre. They have delivered food parcels from the food bank.

"They've stood in culverts digging out debris to prevent flooding. They've removed fallen trees on the Biddulph Valley Way so people can safely get their exercise. They've gone above and beyond."

Lisa Thomson, Director of Communications and Charity at UHNM said: "This exciting new campaign is all about giving back to the community who have been there to support us during the pandemic.

"These are challenging times for everyone, but we are lucky to have such amazing people in our community and we want to capture and celebrate some of the unique stories about how local heroes have supported a colleague, relative family member or neighbour. We are hoping as many people as possible join in and shout out about a local hero they know."

The campaign will focus on a range of different members of the community in various themed days including Hero of the Week, Junior Heroes and Feel Good Friday.

Steve Rushton, UHNM Charity Manager added: "We want to bring the community that we serve closer to us. As part of the campaign, we're excited to share different topics each day, giving people the chance to nominate a hero of the week, highlight the fantastic work of local businesses and share tips and advice on how you can make a difference to those around you during these challenging times."
