Biddulph town councillors have supported plans to set up a new "nano-brewery" on the Brown Lees Road Industrial Estate in Knypersely.

A Mr G Whalley recently submitted an application for permission to add the brewery to his storage and distribution site on the industrial estate.

The brewery would be located at unit 3D, which is currently occupied by a mechanical contracting company called Sovereign Planned Services.

A statement submitted on behalf of the applicant explained that the nano-brewery would "represent a diversification of the applicant's existing business".

It added: "The brew room will be used for the production of ales, including mashing of barley, boiling wort, fermenting the brew in sealed tanks, and then conditioning the product in tanks and kegs. It will be a small-scale venture and will not require the use of any noisy machinery."

The brewery would also create one additional full-time job, and two additional part-time jobs.

At a meeting of Biddulph Town Council's Planning Committee held this evening (Thursday), councillors supported the plans.

Cllr John Jones said: "It's a new local business, so I think we should support it."

Cllr Jim Garvey added: "I'd also support those comments."

Councillors then voted to submit no adverse comments regarding the plans.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council will make the final decision on the application at a later date.
