A Biddulph boy has been called "wonderful and compassionate" after donating his Christmas money to a local food club for residents in need.

Andrew Wood saved some of his Christmas money to hand it in to The Green Tree House Craft Café on Saturday, enabling the café to provide several food vouchers to hungry residents.

The not-for-profit café is run by community volunteers with the aim of providing affordable meals and shelter from social isolation to vulnerable residents.

The café's food club offers a wide range of food and other household essentials to its members, who can join for £3.50 per week.

A spokesperson for the café praised Andrew's act of kindness, saying: "We live in an amazing community full of absolutely superb people in Biddulph.

"Andrew has been saving some of his Christmas money to donate to the Food Club. This will enable us to give 5 discretionary vouchers to those that really need our support.

"Thankyou for your support, its is massively appreciated and what a wonderful compassionate young man."

A social media post praising Andrew has also amassed over 150 likes, with residents praising him in the comments.

One even offered him a free haircut for his generosity, saying: "Andrew I would like to give you a free haircut at Barberdodds and a free hair product (when we are allowed to open due to lockdown restrictions). You are what makes the youth community of Biddulph great. What an absolute gentleman you are."

Another added: "This is the most uplifting thing I've seen this year. What an absolutely beautiful gesture from this young lad. What a credit to his parents."

While a third said: "Well done Andrew. Very thoughtful and very kind."

Residents can sign up to the food club by visiting the café and bringing proof of address. Membership is required to join, and only one member is allowed per household.

Open on Wednesdays from 10am - 3pm and Saturdays from 10:30am - 2pm, members can visit the café once a week and choose up to 10 items.

The café is located at 72 High Street, Biddulph, ST8 6AS.
