A Moorlands transport lifeline is in gear for a successful year ahead thanks to support from major local employer JCB.

Moorlands Voluntary and Community Transport (MVCT) has been awarded £1,000 to help with running costs by JCB which has its World Headquarters in nearby Rocester.

The local charity operates three minibuses across the Staffordshire Moorlands, enabling hundreds of people each year to attend clubs and activities as well as providing vital transport to and from medical appointments.

MVCT Chief Officer Sally Bentley said: "Transport across the Moorlands is an issue for many residents, but disproportionately affects those who are elderly, infirm or suffer from ill-health.

"These vulnerable people can easily become isolated, which in turn negatively affects their wellbeing.

"Our minibuses allow people to access groups such as luncheon clubs where they meet friends and have a hot meal.

"This simple weekly meeting can tackle isolation and loneliness and help people to live happier, healthier and more independent lives in their own homes and communities.

"While we make a small charge for use of the minibus it does not cover our costs, so this donation from JCB is a great help in ensuring we can keep our service on the road."

A JCB spokesman said: "JCB is a major employer in the Staffordshire Moorlands and we are delighted to give our support to such an important community lifeline which makes a difference to the lives of families both young and old."
