Biddulph motorists urged to take care over weekend as storms predicted

Motorists across Staffordshire are being reminded to take extra care on the roads over the weekend as heavy rain could make driving conditions difficult.

A yellow weather warning for thunder storms and rain from the Met Office is in place for Saturday and Sunday, which could bring some instances of flash flooding along with lightning strikes and possibly some large hail.

Staffordshire County Council's highways teams have been out to ensure gullies and drains in areas at risk are clear, however drivers are also being reminded to take extra care, slow down and drive to the conditions.

People should be aware that surface flooding could be present on any road and they should avoid driving through any partially flooded roads, as it's difficult to tell how deep the water could be.

During spells of heavy rain, additional spray from other vehicles could also make visibility and driving more difficult.

David Williams, Staffordshire County Council's Highways Chief said: "While we've been enjoying the very fine weather over the last few days, it looks like we could see some heavy and persistent rain and difficult driving conditions over the weekend.

"With this kind of weather there is a real risk of surface water flooding on the roads and I would like to remind drivers to take extra care if they are out.

"People should slow down, leave plenty of space between them and the vehicle in front of them and be aware that there could be surface flooding around any corner.

"Our highways crews have already been out over the last few days too, ensuring that gullies and drains are kept clear so that any surface water can clear away."
