Biddulph is on Lidl's potential list of new supermarket locations as the chain looks to expand to a total of 1,000 stores around the UK.

The town has made the supermarket's longlist of areas in which it is considering opening new stores, after being named in a new brochure discussing its expansion plans and search for sites around the UK.

Other local potential sites named in the brochure include Congleton, Cheadle, Crewe, Macclesfield, Alsager and Sandbach. The full list of potential local sites in the brochure can be found by scrolling to the second image in this article.

The supermarket chain has more than 20 new stores opening so far this year, and has set itself a 1,000 store milestone in the UK by end of 2023, with around 860 stores currently open, meaning 140 new stores are targeted within the next couple of years.

Biddulph currently still only has one supermarket in the town, which is Sainsbury's on Biddulph High Street, but this is soon about to change with a highly anticipated Aldi supermarket due to open in October.

However, it's important to note that Lidl's intentions to open in Biddulph are by no means guaranteed to go ahead, with the current list only indicating towns that the supermarket feels has the right requirements to open a new store.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB said: "We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation. Despite the challenges of the past year, we still managed to meet our ambitious target of opening, on average, one new store per week across Great Britain.

"We are looking forward to opening more stores throughout the country and welcoming new colleagues in the coming months and years, so that more communities can access high quality food at the lowest prices on the market."

All stores will include Lidl's Bakery, solar panels on the exterior to provide renewable energy for the sites, in addition to the installation of electric vehicle charging points. Each new store will also become part of Lidl's food redistribution programme Feed It Back, which sees surplus food donated to local communities, via food banks charities.
