A man has raised over £5,000 for two amazing causes by running the London marathon after his grandson was diagnosed with Leukaemia.
Super grandad Ant Fuller ran the world famous marathon on Sunday (2nd October), completing the 26.2 mile course in a time of five hours and four minutes.
Ant was raising money for charities Leukaemia UK and Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance after one of his grandsons, Harry, who attends the Happy Hours nursery in Biddulph, was sadly diagnosed with Leukaemia.
And his fundraising effort was a huge success, raising over £5,400 and smashing his initial target of £2,000.
Ant explained on his JustGiving page how in May 2021, Harry was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at 18 months old.
Harry was put on a three-and-a-half-year treatment plan, which includes daily chemotherapy, steroids, lumber punctures and transfusions.
Explaining his decision to fundraise for Leukaemia UK, Ant said: "The chemotherapy that Harry receives was developed before man first landed on the moon. We need research to get new medication that isn't as toxic.
"Just because their hair grows back, does not mean it's over and everything is ok - it's never over and it is a lifelong journey. As survivors age, they can experience health problems years or decades earlier than their peers.
"Currently, almost all survivors have some description of lasting effects from their cancer treatment. Therefore, more research and kinder treatments are so desperately needed."
And discussing Stafford-based charity Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance he added: "Their aim is to support the whole family during and after a child's cancer diagnosis. They send arts and craft boxes every half term, and the Easter bunny and Santa have also made an appearance at the right time of year, which are such huge things to receive due to Harry not being able to attend normal events due to the risk of infection. They are a fantastic charity and I want to help them continue to support other families."
The Happy Hours nursery have since congratulated Ant on his amazing fundraising efforts.
A spokesperson said: "I know we are biased but one of our nursery grandparents is a superhero! Harry's grandad ran the London Marathon today in five hours and four minutes to raise money and awareness for Leukaemia and children's cancer charities. With a target of £2,000 he had hit the £4000 mark before he even set off!
"Well done grandad Ant! You've absolutely smashed it and your Happy Hours family are just as proud as your actual family."
Harry's family, as well as the local community, have organised a range of incredible fundraising activities since Harry's diagnosis.
We reported previously how the local community came together to raise thousands for Harry's family just days after he was diagnosed.
We also reported how, on the first anniversary of his diagnosis, 'Harry's Night' was organised by parents Katie and Ryan Saunders and raised more than £3,000 for the Children's Oncology Department at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.
Ant's fundraiser is still live, and if you would like to donate, visit his JustGiving page here.
