CCTV cameras are due to be installed at Staffordshire's tips so residents can check the size of the queues before deciding whether to make the trip.

The idea has been put forward with the aim of reducing traffic at the county's recycling centres, with live online video streams due to be installed at all of Staffordshire's tips, including the one in Biddulph.

The scheme is due to be approved at Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet meeting next week.

We reported previously how the management of the county's tips was brought back in-house by the council in March.

Cllr Simon Tagg, Cabinet Member for Environment, Infrastructure and Climate Change said, "The management and day-to-day running of Staffordshire's Household Waste Recycling Centres is a large, complex operation and I am delighted that the move to bring the service back in-house has gone so smoothly.

"This will ensure we maintain the best service for residents, be sustainable and provide value for money for taxpayers and I know that users are already noticing improvements on the ground. Now we begin to think about long term development and our ambitious plans to improve facilities and encourage more sophisticated recycling methods."

A report prepared by the council ahead of next week's meeting provided more information about the CCTV installations.

It says: "There are several innovations that have been brought to the network. All sites have been supplied with appropriate ICT equipment. This is allowing for efficient communications and training between sites and the management team.

"There is a new CCTV system being installed across all sites. A live stream from each site will be accessible via the internet so that members of the public will be able to better plan their visits.

"The CCTV System will also allow improved accident and incident investigation. Also coupled with the new body worn cameras, that are being deployed, this will improve security for operatives and other site users."

Next week's meeting can be watched live online via the webcast portal on Staffordshire County Council's website.
