A Biddulph veterinary centre has been thanked for saving a five month old puppy after it ate a discarded piece of chewing gum while out on a walk.
Peggy, a border collie, was being walked on Biddulph Valley Way when she ate a piece of gum that someone had dropped on the tracks.
Luckily, she was brought back to health by Bluehouse Vets in Biddulph, who were able to administer her with an injection.
Now Peggy's owner has thanked the vets for their help and urged residents not to drop their gum on the ground as it can be dangerous to dogs.
They said: "I just wanted to extend a huge thankyou to Blue House Vets for their help today.
"We have a five month old Border Collie pup. Whilst walking her on the tracks this morning Peggy picked up and ingested some discarded chewing gum.
"Chewing gum contains xylitol which is safe for humans but is highly toxic to dogs and even in small amounts can lead to seizures and liver failure and, god forbid, it can be fatal.
"I picked up the phone to Blue House and they advised me to bring Peggy down and administered an injection to bring on vomiting. There was indeed chewing gum in Peggy's stomach contents.
"My plea to people is this - please don't discard food waste on the ground especially gum. To add to this, the litter and dog waste on the tracks is just beyond disgusting.
"Just think before you drop litter of any kind. It has consequences. Take it home and dispose of it properly."
