Emergency services overreacted in their response to the incident at Waterworld yesterday that saw the premises evacuated and two hospitalised, the venue has said.

We reported yesterday how police, fire crews and paramedics were called to Waterworld after swimmers had to be evacuated from the popular local water park due to "eye and throat irritation and nausea".

The water park remained closed today following the incident, when two people were taken to hospital and 46 people treated on the scene by paramedics.

However, the venue has now said the incident was "blown completely out of proportion".

The park said in a statement: "We had received a small number of reports from customers about irritation to their eyes and throat, and were dealing with the situation.

"At no time was there any need for the emergency services to be called.

"The huge over-reaction from emergency services was incredibly distressing for our customers and our staff."

However, West Midlands Ambulance Service said it had been a "well-managed" operation by the emergency services.

The water park added: "Emergency services inspected the entire venue today and found nothing of concern."

They are now hoping to reopen tomorrow (Friday).
