Moorlands MP Karen Bradley was one of 318 MPs to reject a proposal to implement recommendations from the first phase of the Grenfell Inquiry into the Fire Safety Bill.

The proposed Labour amendment was rejected on Monday evening by 318 votes to 188.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the Government had shown "a shameful dereliction of duty" by rejecting the proposal, while the group Grenfell United said it was "outraged" by the vote's result.

However, the Government's Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick replied that they were "committed to implementing" the inquiry's recommendations.

He added that the implementations were "definitely going to happen", but the Government wanted to first finish hearing the views of residents and the housing industry in an ongoing fire safety consultation which is due to close on 12th October.

Elsewhere locally, Congleton MP Fiona Bruce and Macclesfield MP David Rutley also voted against the amendment. Crewe MP Keiran Mullan was not present for the vote due to a Coronavirus scare, but said he would have voted against the amendment if he had been there.

The MP for the area which includes the Grenfell tower, Felicity Buchan, also voted against the amendment.

The amendment would have imposed a new set of regulations on building managers in England, such as requiring them to share information with their local fire service about aspects of their buildings' designs, carry out regular inspections of lifts and entrances, and share fire safety instructions with residents.

Biddulph Nub News contacted Mrs Bradley's office for comment yesterday (Thursday), but has not yet received a response.
