Local students and teachers have been thanked for putting up with the changes and uncertainty around results as GCSE grades are handed out today.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, students did not sit any exams this year, and the last few weeks have seen controversy over the way grades have been awarded.
Biddulph Nub News reported recently how the decision was made this week to revert students' exam results to teacher-assessed grades, rather than using an algorithm.
Pressure mounted on education leaders to make the decision as around 40% of A-level results were downgraded by exams regulator Ofqual, which used a formula based on schools' prior grades.
Education secretary Gavin Williamson has apologised to students who were affected by the confusion, and confirmed that today's GCSE results would also be graded through teachers' own assessments.
Now Staffordshire County Councillor Jonathan Price, Cabinet Member for Education, has thanked students and teachers for their "inspiring" patience throughout the uncertainty.
He said: "It is good news that we now have clarity on how GCSE results are being calculated, as this means pupils can focus on their next steps, whether that's going into sixth form, college, or taking an apprenticeship.
"All school pupils have had a very challenging year so far, from coping with changes in how lessons are delivered, to being separated from friends and having uncertainly around their exams. The way pupils have responded to these challenges has been nothing short of inspiring.
"Teachers have also been working incredibly hard to keep lessons going throughout lockdown, and undertaking the unenviable task of taking decisions that direction impact people's futures.
"I also want to remind people to celebrate getting their results sensible, and to keep following social distancing guidelines. Our young people have a huge amount to offer this county, and are continuing to play an important part in helping to prevent a second peak of infections.
"To every pupil picking up GCSE results today, I want to wish them the best for the future. This year has been very difficult for everyone, but I am proud of the way Staffordshire schools and students have risen to the challenge."
