Families looking for something to do over the August Bank Holiday weekend are being urged to opt for a 'staycation' and help support the local tourism sector.

Staffordshire is home to a wide array of attractions and locations, with plenty of things for families to do over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Whilst many attractions are now open following the lockdown, some have not reopened yet and others have changed their opening times. Many businesses are also asking people to book in advance, to help them maintain social distancing and visitors may be asked to wear a face covering. Before making a trip, people should visit the attraction's website for specific details.

Thrill seekers can enjoy the adrenaline rush of rides and roller coasters at the Alton Towers Resort or brave the terrifying Alton Towers Dungeon. Families can also enjoy a family fun day out at Drayton Manor Park, Where children can meet all their favourite characters at Thomas Land.

You can also drop in and say hello to the monkeys at Trentham Monkey Forest, where you can walk amongst two families of wild Barbary macaques roaming free in 60 acres of Staffordshire Forest - the only place in Britain where you can do so.

There are country parks and landscapes such as Cannock Chase, which offers beautiful scenery and picturesque views for lovers of nature. With a number of different trails, you can walk, bike, hike and explore the forests.

Staffordshire is also home to the National Memorial Arboretum, home to the iconic Armed Forces Memorial, where there are more than 150-acres of maturing woodland and gardens to explore.

Burton is the home of UK brewing, and the National Brewery Centre where you can learn all about the history of beer and brewing. And sticking with Burton, families can also enjoy a fun day out at the National Forest Adventure Farm.

Lichfield Cathedral is also a must-see for visitors. There is plenty to explore with over 1300 years of history in the only medieval three-spired Cathedral in the UK.

Philip White, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy at Staffordshire County Council said: "Opting for a staycation this bank holiday is not only a great way of exploring what's on your doorstep but you'll also be supporting local tourism businesses at the same time.

"So whether it's the thrills of our theme parks like Alton Towers or Drayton Manor Park, relaxing walks on our country parks or a family day out at the National Forrest Adventure Farm, there's something for everyone. As well as our larger, more well-known attractions we also have lots of smaller hidden gems too, as well as excellent places to eat out, drink and shop too.

"Whatever you do, or where ever you end up, please follow any guidance in place to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus. Booking is also essential at most attractions at the minute, so please remember to visit their websites and Facebook pages for specific details before visiting."

Monday 31 August is also the last day of the Government's 'Eat Out To Help Out' offer, and the final chance to get 50% off the food and soft drinks bill up to £10 per person.

Staffordshire's tourism economy is worth around £1.8 billion annually with around 25 million people enjoying day or overnight trips to the county. The sector also supports around 32,000 jobs.
