A set of miners' lamps that were repurposed to decorate a Biddulph roundabout before being removed after falling into disrepair could soon return if work to refurbish them goes well.

We reported previously how the lamps, which were located at the roundabout near the fire station in Biddulph, which connects St John's Road with Church Road and Princess Street, were removed by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

The lamps had fallen into a state of disrepair, and so were loaded onto the back of a truck and taken away to Leek.

The council had previously been urged to restore their lamps to their former glory, however they were unable to provide a guarantee that the lamps could be restored and replaced at the roundabout.

Now Biddulph town and district Cllr Jill Salt, who has been pushing for the lamps to be returned to the roundabout, says the lamps are back in Biddulph and could return to the roundabout depending on their structural integrity.

She said: "[The lamps are] safely back in Biddulph awaiting a full structural survey, and then we'll make some decisions as to what happens next, our aim is to restore them."

She added that it was "a crying shame" that the lamps had been allowed to fall into disrepair and that she hoped they could be salvaged.

Fellow town and district Cllr Nigel Yates has previously suggested that the lamps should be replaced with a new memorial at the roundabout if they cannot be restored.
