Moorlands residents asked to surrender weapons this weekend ahead of law change

By Jack Lenton 5th Feb 2021

Moorlands residents have been asked to give the police any "dangerous weapons" they might have this weekend.

A weapons surrender is being held tomorrow (Saturday) between 9am and 1am, and residents are allowed to leave their homes to do this despite the lockdown.

The firearms and knife surrender is being held by the police following the Offensive Weapons Act, which makes it illegal to possess more kinds of weapons.

The act will make it unlawful to possess specific types of knives, certain rapid firing rifles, and a range of other offensive weapons.

Those who hand in the weapons to the police will be able to claim compensation for their loss.

The nearest police station to Biddulph that is taking part in the weapons surrender is Leek Police station.

Two more weapons surrenders will be held on 27th February and 6th March before it becomes an offense to possess any of the weapons covered in the act.
