Over 400 Staffordshire firefighters can now access lateral flow Covid tests

By Jack Lenton 28th Jan 2021

More than 400 Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters now have access to lateral flow tests for Covid-19.

The firefighters, including trainees, have been trained on how to test themselves at home on a weekly basis.

The tests, involving a swab of the nose and throat, are designed to identify those with Covid-19 who are experiencing no symptoms. The results are shown within 20-30 minutes.

Over the next few weeks, this will be rolled-out to include all staff who are working within fire stations and headquarters.

Bob Preston, COVID response lead at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We are continuing to deliver prevention activities, provide fire safety advice and support, respond to emergencies and carry out essential work with health, other emergency services, local authorities and partners to support the community during this unprecedented situation.

"I am grateful to those who are testing themselves as it provides an extra level of reassurance to our staff and their families.

"This will enhance or current Covid-secure environment, improving the safety and wellbeing of our staff.

"It is hoped that by using this type of test, positive cases will be identified earlier which will make it easier to control the spread of the virus.

"The service is constantly updating staff as the situation evolves and we remain committed to doing our very best to maintain public safety."
