Planning permission to build a new block of stables in Biddulph has been refused by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

The application was submitted by a Mrs Pauline Dishman, who wanted to build the stables on land off Troughstones Road, Biddulph Common.

The application received several letters of objection from local residents.

One, picked at random, submitted by nearby resident David Bailey, objected to the plans as he felt that the stables would impact the local wildlife.

He said: "I have farmed on Troughstones for 52 years. Heavy horses will soon trample a small wet field.

"The ground nesting birds and the brown hares will leave their habitats, noise and artificial light in a now tranquil area will drive them away.

"Dry stone walls have been removed to be replaced by post and rail fences, this shouldn't happen, small mammals and newts nest in dry stone walls."

However, the application was recommended for approval by Biddulph Town Council, subject to the condition that it wouldn't contravene on the Green Belt and that the site was for personal use only.

Nevertheless, the district council refused the application, on the grounds that the size of the development and its concrete forecourt would represent inappropriate development in the Green Belt.

Planning officers also felt the development would be harmful to the character and appearance of the rural location, and risked conflict between horses and users of the nearby footpath.
