'Greater Stoke' proposals: You speak your minds
Yesterday, (Tuesday) Biddulph Nub News reported how the Staffordshire Moorlands could be merged with Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme according to a new report by the Centre for Cities think tank.
The three authorities, which all currently have their own councils, would become one new unitary council, named 'Greater Stoke', and run by a single elected mayor.
Following the report, residents have made their voices heard, with most of your comments being resoundingly against the proposals.
Below, Biddulph Nub News has compiled a cross-section of your comments, so you can gauge what people have to say about the matter at a glance...
Question: Would you like to live in a 'Greater Stoke' local authority area?- "No - Biddulph and the rest of the Moorlands would be even further down the pecking order if we were merged with Stoke and Newcastle. Merger proposals are just another example of big Government further centralising services and being even more remote and less accountable to local residents."
- "Absolutely not, we are Staffordshire Moorlands, and that's the way we should stay."
- "Call me a snob but I don't want to be associated with stoke and Newcastle. It's bad enough that Stoke-on-Trent is on Biddulph's postal address."
- "No, I like not being Stoke-on-Trent."
- "Definitely not! We're in Staffordshire Moorlands and proud of it."
- "Absolutely not, the service Stoke and Newcastle get is awful. Leave us alone with the Moorlands."
- "No thanks, Stoke on Trent council is a dive - total mess."
- "This idea as been put forward before several years ago. I prefer to be part of the Moorlands. I suppose it would save money with less councillors' expenses though."
- "We do not want to change, we like being Staffordshire Moorlands, please listen to what the people are saying who live there."
- "It's a pity too many voted Conservative; this was in their manifesto."
- "This would be very bad for the Moorlands."
- "Absolute crazy idea, leave Staffordshire Moorlands alone."
- "It will make it easier for local government to implement policies. Sounds good in theory but it could mean that policies are made which negatively impact the lives of people in the area."
- "We should have a vote on it."
- "We like it how it is - we have the best bin collection/recycling system in the country for a start!"
- "I want my councillors to be people I meet in the town, who know what needs doing here."
