47,000 street lights to be replaced with LED bulbs across Staffordshire

By Jack Lenton 14th Sep 2020

Around 47,000 street lights are set to be replaced with LED bulbs across Staffordshire, under new proposals to be discussed at a county council meeting this week.

Staffordshire County Council's LED Invest to Save Initiative will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The Cabinet is expected to approve the initiative, which will be delivered over four phases, with each phase taking around a year to complete.

Upon completion of all four phases, the council says that energy consumption will be reduced by 8,627,502 kWh and generate energy savings in the region of £1.6m per year.

Cllr David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: "Obtaining an interest-free loan to update 47,000 street lights and use less energy and save more money makes sense all round.

"After the loan is repaid from the initial savings made by using the more energy-efficient street lights, taxpayers will continue to benefit by up to £1.6 million a year.

"I'm delighted that we can upgrade services and provide good value-for-money at the same time."

The work will be commissioned by the authority's street lighting contractor, Lighting for Staffordshire, and undertaken by E.ON Energy Solutions.
