A Biddulph café is aiming to help low income residents feed their families with the upcoming launch of its new community food club.

The Green Tree House café on Biddulph High Street begins its new, volunteer-run initiative on 14th October, with its organisers saying due to factors such as Coronavirus, the scheme is "needed more than ever".

The not-for-profit café is run by community volunteers with the aim of providing affordable meals and shelter from social isolation to vulnerable residents.

Discussing the new food club, Amanda Beech, who helps to run the café, said: "We had planned to do this earlier in the year, but Covid-19 prevented it. Now it's all systems go.

"The Green Tree House has always tried to help people on low income or those who are homeless. Now, especially with Covid-19 and people not being able to work, this is definitely needed more so than ever."

The club will be offering a wide range of food and other household essentials to its members, who can join for £3.50 per week.

Open on Wednesdays from 10am - 3pm and Saturdays from 10:30am - 2pm, members can visit the café once a week and choose up to 10 items.

Amanda continued: "There is also a brilliant community pantry already based at the Youth Zone on Church Street, and I hope people will use both centres. We are all working together to help the Biddulph community.

"Sadly we had to close in March, as lot of our volunteers were shielding at the time, and to keep our customers safe we closed. But we are back now and have some exciting activities planned.

"All the Biddulph community is welcome to join our food club. Also, if anyone would like to volunteer on Wednesdays and Saturdays please call in to the café or message our Facebook page."

Residents can sign up to be members from Thursday, 1st October by visiting the café and bringing proof of address. Membership is required to join, and only one member is allowed per household.

The café is located at 72 High Street, Biddulph, ST8 6AS.
