Biddulph charity forced to throw away donations left outside shop during lockdown

A Biddulph charity says it has been forced to throw away donations that had been left outside its door while they were forced to close during lockdown.

Biddulph's branch of British Red Cross, which is based on Well Street, appealed to residents on Friday to save their donations for when the shop is able to reopen, and warned that people could risk being charged with fly tipping for leaving donations outside the shop.

And today (Monday), the charity again said that they had been forced to remove donations from outside the shop, and added that they were sadly forced to dispose of the donations as they had become unusable due to the wet weather.

A spokesperson for Biddulph's Red Cross branch said on Friday: "We are always grateful for your kind donations but please I am asking again that whilst we are closed donations are not left outside of the Red Cross shop as there is nobody there to take them in or let you in with them in order to quarantine the items.

"You are putting yourself at risk of being charged with fly tipping as there are very clear signs on the doors.

"We will let you know as soon as we are able to return to the shop. Thank you for your understanding"

They added today: "We have once again had to go and remove donations from outside of the shop, unfortunately due to the wet weather they are not fit to sell and have had to be disposed of.

"We would appreciate it if you could hold on to your donations until we re-open. If this is not possible then please dispose of them in a suitable manner. Do not leave them outside the shop. Thankyou."
