Many thanks to Biddulph Male Voice Choir for submitting this article! The choir recently held a charity concert to help fund the restoration of a local church.
A series of concerts in aid of the restoration fund for the Bethesda Methodist Church in Albion Street, Hanley, began on Saturday 9th April with a free concert given by Biddulph Male Voice Choir.
The restoration of this unique ancient chapel is ongoing, and has always been supported by the choir who give their services freely in an effort to raise funds.
In a mixed programme, the choir started by singing the rousing 'African Prayer' followed by the quiet and harmonious 'Lord's Prayer' which gave a complete contrast to the choir's abilities. Following this the choir continued with 'With a voice of singing' and 'What would I do without my music' before again contrasting sharply by singing the gentle and lilting 'Gwahoddiad'. This was immediately followed by the rousing 'Roman War Song'
After a very short break the choir continued with 'Mansions of the Lord' American Trilogy 'and 'Working Man' before singing in Welsh the beautiful 'Deus Salutis' with its wonderful soft harmonies. The next two numbers were choir favourites 'Comrades song of Hope' and' Morte Criste' which brought the concert to an end. Following loud applause the choir then sang an encore 'When the saints go marching in' which was greatly appreciated by the audience.
This was a great end to a concert enjoyed both by the choir and audience alike.
This year marks the Centenary Year of the choir making it one of the oldest male voice choirs in the UK, and the diary for the year is almost complete, with the choir singing numerous concerts at various venues. Anyone interested in joining the choir to help celebrate this special year can call 07803 124768 or email join@biddulphmvchoir,co.uk The ability to read music is not a requirement and all new singers will be given a warm and friendly welcome
