Biddulph man racks up over £400 in fines for parking outside own house

A Biddulph man says he has received hundreds of pounds worth of fines for parking outside his own house - and now he and other residents are trying to get the parking rules changed.

Residents on Tunstall Road have been left in a parking predicament due to the parking rules on one end of the street.

Parking at the bottom end of the road near Well Street is only allowed for 30 minutes between 8am - 5.30pm due to the close proximity of the High Street and many local businesses.

However, further up the road near the double roundabouts there are no parking restrictions.

Residents who live on the end of the road with restrictions are trying to get the rules changed, but the county council says that doing so would have an adverse impact on local businesses.

Tunstall Road resident Phil Burndred says he's received parking fines totalling hundreds of pounds for parking outside his own house over the years.

He said: "This parking issue has been going on for as long as I can remember. I personally must have paid over £400 just for parking outside my front door as have my neighbours.

"If people want to park outside their homes during the restricted times they have to always keep an eye on their cars in case the warden comes, and if they are parking overnight and can't get up before 8am the next morning to move their car, such as if they are sick, they know they will probably get a ticket."

He added that he and other residents have been forced to park down any back alleys or other areas around the town that they can find if they don't want to risk being ticketed, which has caused elderly or less mobile residents to have to carry shopping a long way from their cars to their homes.

He also explained that although there are no parking restrictions further up the road, parking there is usually not an option because the spaces are occupied by the residents of that part of the road.

Another Tunstall Road resident, who did not want to be named, said she felt trapped in her own home due to the restrictions.

She said: "I am a resident on this road and in my late 60's suffering with rheumatoid arthritis and the parking has impacted on my everyday life.

"I am scared of using the car in case I can't find anywhere to park. I only go shopping at 6am one day a week because of that reason as I need to park nearby with all my shopping bags. I feel trapped in my home and unable to socialise if it means using my car."

Explaining why he felt that changing the parking rules would be justified, Phil added: "I think local businesses would like people to park for longer. The residents would like to keep a watchful eye on their vehicles, especially those who work from home.

"The council would save money - they would have no lines to paint and wardens could be redeployed to busier areas. Parking would not be a hazard as the road is now a designated bus route."

The county council on the other hand said any changes to parking rules would be met with opposition from local businesses.

Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said: "Requests for changes to on-street parking should be sent to local county councillors for consideration on the first instance.

"If daytime parking restrictions such as this are removed then spaces are often filled all day by people working nearby, affecting both residents and businesses, who rely on them for trade.

"We'd therefore anticipate proposals to remove restrictions would be met with objections by those businesses."
