Biddulph schoolkids allowed to ditch blazers as Met Office issues extreme heat warning
Students in Biddulph have been told they can leave their blazers at home after warnings of extreme heat were projected to hit the town over the next few days.
Several local schools, including Biddulph High School and Woodhouse Academy, have made the decision to allow pupils not to wear blazers to help keep them safe in the upcoming heat wave.
Students at the two schools were asked to wear the rest of their uniform and ensure they have a water bottle with them.
It comes as the Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat in the coming days, with Biddulph expected to experience temperatures as high as 33C.
The weather warning is in place for Sunday and Monday, (17th - 18th July).
It covers Biddulph and indeed most of England, stretching from Plymouth to Middlesborough.
The Met Office has issued some advice on what we can expect in the heat, saying: "Exceptionally high temperatures are possible during Sunday and Monday and could lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.
"Population-wide adverse health effects are likely to be experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
"Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required.
"Significantly more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to increased risk of water safety incidents.
"Delays on roads and road closures are possible, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with potential for significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays."
They also issued some top tips for staying safe in the heat:
- Look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated. Older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone are particularly at risk.
- If you live alone, ask a relative or friend to phone to check that you are not having difficulties during periods of extreme heat.
- Stay cool indoors: Close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors.
- If going outdoors, use cool spaces considerately.
- Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol.
- Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.
- Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
- Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat.
- Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day.
- Make sure you take water with you, if you are travelling.
- Check the latest weather forecast and temperature warnings.
- During warm weather going for a swim can provide much welcomed relief, take care and follow local safety advice, if you are going into open water to cool down.
