Biddulph schools to close as Government announces lockdown

Local News by Jack Lenton 4th Jan 2021

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced stricter restrictions for Biddulph and the rest of England as the country moves into yet another national lockdown.

In a televised announcement tonight (Monday) the PM said that residents must stay at home and only leave to shop for essentials, for exercise, to get medical supplies and have a Covid test, or to escape domestic abuse.

The Prime Minister also told residents to work from home unless they are absolutely unable to do so.

Primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities must close, returning to remote learning and only opening for children of key workers or the vulnerable. Exams are also likely to be disrupted again this year.

Early years settings such as nurseries and childminders can remain open, and existing childcare bubbles will be allowed to stay in place.

Mr Johnson hoped schools could reopen after the February half term, with areas returning to the tiers system and beginning to move back down the tiers as the vaccine is rolled out to more people.

Before the lockdown announcement, Biddulph and most of England had already been placed into Tier 4 restrictions, with residents being told to stay at home unless they had a "reasonable excuse".

However, the Government said the decision was made to introduce another nationwide lockdown after the UK saw a record high number of 58,784 cases and 407 deaths.
