Biddulph to mark Remembrance as normal once again after 2020 services held in lockdown

By Jack Lenton 10th Nov 2021

Biddulph is returning to its usual schedule of Remembrance commemorations this year, after last year's services had to be held on a smaller scale due to Covid-19.

Biddulph Nub News reported last year how Biddulph marked Remembrance Sunday 2020 amidst a challenging set of circumstances, with the town continuing to commemorate members of the Armed Forces in the era of lockdown and social distancing.

A small act of Remembrance still took place at the cenotaph, however, and this was streamed live on Biddulph Town Council's Facebook page for residents to watch at home.

Other community organisations around the town also held their own Covid-secure Remembrance commemorations.

This included St Lawrence's Church, who recorded their Remembrance service and posted it to YouTube.

Some residents also marked Remembrance by bowing their heads for a minute of quiet tribute at the doorsteps of their homes at 11am - in a similar way to when people held a minute's applause to show their appreciation for NHS workers during the first lockdown.

This year however, services are due to return as normal both tomorrow (11th November) and on Remembrance Sunday.

A spokesperson for Biddulph Town Council said: "Remembrance Sunday is a day for the nation to remember and honour all those who sacrificed their lives to secure and protect our freedom.

"A town centre event, led by the Royal British Legion, commemorates those who served in all wars.

"A procession from the Town Hall at 10.30am and a service, wreath-laying ceremony and two minutes silence at the cenotaph, is followed by a service at Biddulph Methodist Church.

"On Armistice Day (11 November), we meet at the cenotaph at 10.50am for a period of reflection and remembrance."
