Community members who make Biddulph a better place to live, work and socialise have been presented with mayoral awards - 16 months after nominations opened!

We reported back in February 2021 how Biddulph residents were asked to nominate their unsung heroes for the town mayor's awards.

The presentation was delayed due to Covid restrictions, but the winners have now been presented with certificates and their prizes.

The winner of each category was awarded £30 and the overall winner was also awarded an additional £50.

There were seven categories up for grabs including Youth, Sport and Leisure, Art and Culture, Tourism and Trade, Environmental, Ambassador of Biddulph and Lifetime Achievement.

Nicola Allen Hill was the overall winner, and she also won in the Environmental category.

We reported previously how Nicola voluntarily runs a bird and wildlife rescue centre in Biddulph, which looks after local injured or lost birds and other wildlife that are in need of care.

She told Nub News: "I've never won anything in my life but it's nice to know my efforts are appreciated!"

She added: "I honestly can't believe it! Thank you so much to every single person that voted for me. I'm blown away. There's some fantastic people in this town that I was up against so it really is like a big pat on the back. I'm so grateful."

Another winner was Reach for the Stars Nursery director Lynsey Hurst, who won in the Ambassador of Biddulph category.

A spokesperson for Reach for the Stars said: "Growing up and living in Biddulph, raising her family with her husband, working in Biddulph Children's Centre, opening five nursery settings, two of which are in Biddulph and being the chair of governors at a Biddulph school (and an extra Governor post in Leek) - Lynsey has accumulated many years working within the community, and we believe she thoroughly deserves this award, and clearly the mayor thought the same!"

If you were a winner in any of the other categories, feel free to let us know and we will add you into this article!
