A new book by a local author which celebrates Biddulph's mining history is being launched this weekend.

The book, which is titled 'The Small Mines of the Biddulph Valley 1800 - 1980' was written by Jonathan Fryer and will launch at Biddulph Library this Saturday (19th February) from 10am - 1pm.

The book tells the story of 50 small mines, their workers and their owners. Publications from the Biddulph and District Genealogy and Historical Society will also be on sale.

The book is 177 pages long and includes 49 pictures and maps, and will be on sale for £9.99, and people will have the chance to have their copy signed by the author.

Jonathan said: "I hope this will be of interest to people in the local area."

He also thanked the staff at Biddulph Library for hosting the event.

The book launch is topical in Biddulph following the removal of miners' lamps from a roundabout in the town after they fell into a state of disrepair.

Biddulph Nub News has also previously reported on Biddulph Town Council's plans to relocate a miners' memorial wheel on the High Street to a different area of the town, which was met with a petition from residents that received over 1,000 signatures.

The council received the petition back in October, but to date have still made no decision on whether to go ahead with moving the wheel, other than to refer it to a future committee for further discussion.
