Call for revamp to run-down Biddulph mill

Calls have been made to find a new use for a dilapidated Biddulph mill following concerns that it is "blighting" the town.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Councillors discussed the Albion Mill on Station Road in Biddulph at a recent meeting of the Service Delivery Overview and Scrutiny Panel.

Cllr Nigel Yates, of the Biddulph West ward, raised a point about a 'Mills Master Plan' which is due to be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the council.

He was concerned that only mills in Leek had been included in the plan, and that there may be no plans to revamp run-down mills in Biddulph or elsewhere in the Moorlands.

Cllr Yates said: "The Albion Mill on Station Road is blighting that part of the town, and it doesn't look like there is any development going to take place in the forseeable future.

"I was previously given the assurance that it [the master plan] did include all the mills in the district, but I have concerns that the master plan is specifically for Leek.

"I want to make the point that outside of Leek there are issues with mills, and very kindly both the leader and the cabinet member for assets came to Biddulph and are now aware of the situation."

The district council's leader, Cllr Paul Roberts, agreed to look into including the Biddulph mill in the plan.

He replied: "I will look into this and see if we can bring the Biddulph mills into the plan as well."

The historic mill dates back to 1884 and is the largest of Biddulph's former mills.

It was used to produce a variety of heavy cloth called fustian.

However it now sits in a dilapidated state and it is unclear what will become of the mill in the future.
