There are safety concerns over a 'rapidly deteriorating' disused mill in Biddulph after broken glass was spotted falling from the building's windows and onto the street below.

Biddulph town and district councillor Nigel Yates noticed the dilapidated condition of Albion Mill this morning (Friday 5th August).

He said: "More broken window glass on the footpath below Albion Mill, Station Rd.

"I've reported it to building control as we need all the windows making safe, and requested a street clean.

"I've been given an assurance the Albion Mill is to be added to the Moorlands Mill Strategy as a long term solution to this once iconic, but rapidly deteriorating building needs to be found."

Cllr Charlie Smith added: "It would be great to see this building brought back into use in our community, it has such amazing potential given its size and location."

We reported recently how Cllr Yates has called for Staffordshire Moorlands District Council to find a new use for the mill following concerns that it is "blighting" the town.

Cllr Yates was was concerned that only mills in Leek had been included in the council's mills master plan, and that there may be no plans to revamp run-down mills in Biddulph or elsewhere in the Moorlands.

The district council's leader, Cllr Paul Roberts, agreed to look into including the Biddulph mill in the plan.

The historic mill dates back to 1884 and is the largest of Biddulph's former mills.

It was used to produce a variety of heavy cloth called fustian.

However it now sits in a dilapidated state and it is unclear what will become of the mill in the future.
