Coronavirus: Gatherings of over six people banned as restrictions tighten

Social gatherings of more than six people in Biddulph and beyond will be banned from Monday (14th September) - with some exceptions - under a tightening of Government Coronavirus restrictions.

The move comes after a spike in infections has prompted Government concerns over a second wave.

From Monday in England, anyone socialising in groups larger than half a dozen will be liable to a £100 on-the-spot fine, which will double on repeat offences up to a maximum of £3,200.

The limit of six people from up to six households will apply to adults and children both indoors and outdoors, in homes, gardens, parks and venues such as pubs and restaurants.

Currently, the guidance says two households of any size are allowed to meet indoors or outdoors, or up to six people from different households outdoors.

Until now the police have had no powers to stop gatherings unless they exceeded 30.

It is the first time Prime Minister Boris Johnson has imposed a nationwide lockdown measure since restrictions began to be eased in May.

There will be a limited number of exemptions including weddings, funerals, Covid-secure team sports, schools, workplaces and households or 'support bubbles' that have more than six people in them.

The Prime Minister will give further details of the changes at a Downing Street news conference at 4pm today, alongside senior advisers Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance.

People of Biddulph, what do you think of the new restrictions - a necessary measure or an overreaction? Let us know by commenting on our Facebook page or emailing [email protected] - we want to hear from you!
