Families demand action in "collapsing" road row

Families are demanding action to repair a pothole-riddled road in danger of 'collapse'.

A delivery van is the latest vehicle to encounter problems on Fiddler's Bank, in Brown Edge, after it slipped off the carriageway.

The stricken vehicle had to be towed out by a farmer.

Now residents say they are sick of reporting the issues to Staffordshire County Council.

Electrical engineer Ashley Findler, aged 37, who lives just off the road, said: "The road gave way as the van went round the corner.

"Since we've lived here they've been out twice to fix the road in about four years.

"Water runs down the field and across the road.

"One of the local farmers had to pull the van out with his tractor.

"One council worker has told us only horses and carts should be using the road – but it's a public highway.

"Since 2017, everybody who lives nearby has been reporting it to the council multiple times over.

"The road is full of potholes and we've constantly asked the council to repair it.

"They've told us that it's a Class U road, meaning it's the lowest type of road you can get and it's not a priority for them and they'll get around to it eventually.

"We want them to fix the road because it is collapsing.

"A neighbour broke his ankle on it in January due to the potholes and had to crawl back up the bank for help."

The council visited the site this week following the latest incident.

Councillor David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We've got a huge highway network here in Staffordshire, with around 6,000-kilometres of roads.

"As well as responding to reported issues, our highways crews carry out regular inspections to keep our roads as safe as possible.

"Our highways crews have put barriers up at the site of the incident and further works to repair the road will take place as soon as resources are available."
