Up Close is an interview series for Biddulph Nub News, talking to local people about their businesses, hobbies, or anything else they want to chat about!

In the latest instalment of Up Close we spoke to local artist Simon Quinn.

Simon told us he is living his dream of painting local people's fine art commissions, which can range from portraits to still life, pets, or almost anything people would like him to paint for them!

Read our interview below...

How long have you been painting and what made you first start?

"I have been painting all of my adult life. I studied art at Newcastle College, and after this I worked at various establishments as a pottery decorator. After this I decided to follow my dream as a fine art painter which I have been doing ever since."

What are some of your favourite things to paint, and do you have any paintings that you are particularly proud of? Can people commission you to paint whatever they want?

"I love painting portraits but my commissions have covered a wide variety of topics such as horses, still life, family pets basically whatever people want, I mainly work from images that people send me.

Do you have any particular styles you specialise in?

"I work predominantly in oils on canvas which I find the best medium for expressive figurative work, oils are very fluid and adaptable but I also love the luscious colours when working on large realistic paintings."

How long does it take for you to complete a painting and what sorts of prices do you charge for them?

"It can take less than a week to three weeks to complete a painting depending on the size, subject and complexity of the subject. The price can range from £100 to £700.

"A large oil painting on canvas I am working on at the moment is 36 inches by 28 inches and is probably about 70 percent complete."

What would you say to someone who is considering learning to paint?

"My advice to anyone who wants to take up art is just keep practicing, it's amazing how quickly your work will improve, and most of all enjoy it!"

How long have you lived in Biddulph and what do you think of the local area?

"I have lived in Biddulph for nearly 35 years it's a great area with a strong community spirit."
