Moorlands council flies flag at half mast to pay respect to Captain Tom

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is today flying its flag at half mast as a mark of respect for Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The 100-year-old died with Coronavirus and pneumonia yesterday (Tuesday), after raising millions for the NHS by walking laps around his garden.

Following his death, the nation have paid their tributes to Captain Tom, including messages from the Queen and the Prime Minister.

The district council have today joined the nation in paying their respects.

A council spokesperson said: "We're flying the Union Flag at half mast today as a mark of respect for Captain Sir Tom Moore.

"He was a beacon of light and hope, and inspired people all over the world to unite during these difficult times."

The army veteran raised over £33 million for the NHS, and was knighted in July for his incredible fundraising efforts.

Moorlands district Cllr Joe Porter also today paid his respects to Captain Tom, saying: "Proud that we're flying the flag at Moorlands House Staffordshire Moorlands District Council at half mast today to remember and honour the life of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to all our heroes who have been beacons of light during this difficult period."

The Prime Minister has also announced there will be a national 'Clap for Captain Tom' tonight at 6pm.
