Boris Johnson could face a defeat in plans to cut foreign aid after dozens of Conservative MPs, including Moorlands MP Karen Bradley, supported an amendment to reverse the cuts.
The amendment, which was tabled last night (Wednesday), has also been backed by the likes of Jeremy Hunt, David Davis and Theresa May, in a rebellion led by former international development secretary Andrew Mitchell.
It comes following last year's announcement that the UK's foreign aid spending would be reduced from 0.7% of its national income to 0.5% - equating to a decrease of over £4 billion.
A vote will take place in the Commons next week, with the MPs backing the amendment aiming to get foreign aid spending increased back to 0.7% by January 2022.
The government has promised to restore spending to the 0.7% level "when the fiscal situation allows" - but has not specified a date.
Announcing the move, Mitchell said: "Every single member of the House of Commons was elected on a very clear manifesto promise to stand by this commitment.
"We have repeatedly urged the government to obey the law and implored ministers to reconsider breaking this commitment.
"The cuts are now having a devastating impact on the ground and are leading to unnecessary loss of life.
"We urge the government to think again, or we shall be asking parliament to reaffirm the law as it stands so as to oblige the government to meet its legal commitment, keep its very clear pledge to British voters and uphold Britain's promise to the rest of the world."
