All people over 45 in England can now book a Covid jab and Staffordshire County Council is encouraging people not to delay and book their vaccination.

This move comes as all over-50s and high-risk groups have been offered the vaccine ahead of the mid-April deadline set by the government – meaning the second phase of the rollout to younger cohorts can now begin.

Dr Richard Harling, Staffordshire County Council's director of health and care, said: "It's great news even more people in are now able to join the thousands of Staffordshire residents who have already have their Covid vaccination.

"The vaccination programme has been a success in Staffordshire. It is one of the main things people can do protect themselves and their families from the virus and make sure the easing of lockdown keeps on track.

"The vaccine is safe and effective, and I strongly encourage all eligible people to book their slot as soon as they are able to do so."

You can book your vaccination appointments online if any of the following apply:

- You are aged 45 or over

- You are at high risk from coronavirus (clinically extremely vulnerable)

- You have a condition that puts you at higher risk (clinically vulnerable)

- You have a learning disability

- You get a Carer's Allowance, get support following an assessment by your local authority or your GP record shows you are a carer

You do not need to wait to be contacted by the NHS.

Muslim communities observing Ramadan are being reminded that taking up the vaccination does break their fast and the council is also keen to underline that people who have their first or second doses still need to still follow the rules in place and get tested twice a week.

Richard added: "Taking up your jab is vital step for everybody to follow but people need to understand that it does not provide 100% protection or stop transmission.

"We are making fantastic inroads but after receiving your vaccination you must remain cautious – having it is not a greenlight to let your guard down.

"People need to still follow the guideline of hands, face, space, fresh air and still get tested twice a week."
