HRH Prince Charles has awarded former Chief Fire Officer, Becci Bryant, with the Queen's Fire Service Medal.

Becci was recognised with the medal in the Queen's New Year's Honours List in 2020.

The prestigious medal is given to members of the fire services in the UK and Commonwealth in recognition of distinguished services or gallantry.

Becci received the medal at a special ceremony at Windsor Castle where Prince Charles spoke to her about the service's and the county's response to covid-19.

Since joining the service in 1992, Becci, who retired earlier this year, rose through the ranks, from Sub Officer to Area Commander and Executive Director/Deputy Chief Executive.

Becci's appointment to Chief Fire Officer in 2016 made history as she became the first woman in the UK to have achieved such a distinguished position after beginning her career as an operational fire fighter.

Speaking following the award ceremony, Becci said: "I'm still in disbelief that I was considered worthy enough to be nominated for this medal, let alone receive it.

"Meeting HRH Prince Charles was an incredible honour and privilege, and something I will remember for the rest of my life.

"It was a wonderful day made truly special by meeting so many other worthy recipients of awards and the way in which the team at Windsor ensured that the day was one to always remember.

"But, I accept this medal not only for myself, but for the fire service and all the fantastic people that make it a brilliant team working to serve and protect the people of Staffordshire and beyond.

"This recognises all our efforts, especially during the pandemic, to be the best service we can, day-in-day-out."

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams, said: "I'm delighted to see Becci's achievements and contribution to the fire service celebrated nationally.

"I had the pleasure of working with her for just a few months as Staffordshire Commissioner, but I've been aware of her as an inspiring leader in our county for some years, and her decades of work devoted to protecting our communities. This award is well deserved."
