Staffordshire MPs tight-lipped on confidence in Liz Truss

North Staffordshire MPs have refused to comment on the turmoil surrounding prime minister Liz Truss after she was forced to sack her chancellor on Friday after just 38 days in the job.

The prime minister called Kwasi Kwarteng back from a meeting of International finance ministers in the USA, and told him he'd lost his job.

She replaced him with Jeremy Hunt, saying: "It is clear that parts of our mini-budget went further and faster than markets were expecting so the way we are delivering our mission right now has to change."

It comes as the backlash to her plans for the economy has grown.

Many within her own ranks have become disenfranchised as she's had to u-turn on several flagship policies – the most controversial of which was an enormous tax cut for the wealthiest earners.

Over the weekend, three Tory MPs called for the prime minister to resign: Crispin Blunt (Reigate), Jame Wallis (Bridgend), Andrew Bridgen (North West Leicestershire).

In contrast, however, MPs in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire have refused to speak out either in favour or against the prime minister.

A representative for Stoke Central MP Jo Gideon said she was unwilling to make any comment on the matter at the moment.

There was no reply from Jonathan Gullis (Stoke North) or Jack Brereton (Stoke South).

Similarly there was no reply from Karen Bradley (Staffordshire Moorlands) or Aaron Bell (Newcastle-under-Lyme).

The LDRS also contacted MPs in neighbouring constituencies in South Cheshire and were met with a wall of silence.

Kieran Mullan (Crewe and Nantwich) and Fiona Bruce (Congleton) declined to say whether or not they had confidence in the prime minister.
